Is retention like teenage sex? Everyone talks about it, nobody really knows how to do it, everyone thinks everyone else is doing it, so everyone claims they are doing it. In its simplest form, retention is keeping someone engaged with your website or mobile app over time. And this time, it is also our Stammtisch topic.

It’s April and while the clock went forward one hour, the days are getting warming and nature is starting to blossom. It’s that good feeling that spring brings, and it’s the same kind of feeling you want your users to have when they start using your product. The cold days should be behind them, from here on it will only get better. This month’s Stammtisch is all about user retention – how do I make my users fall in love with my product. If you go to market without proper retention numbers, you expose your company to one of the biggest risks to successful growth: pre-mature scaling. Correcting this afterwards is hard and often impossible as money runs out and users leave you. Do this right and you can get access to the holy grail in growth – organic growth. Y Combinator finds the topic so important they dedicated an entire lecture to it in their course at Stanford. We’ve gathered a host of entrepreneurs to talk about how they handled retention in the early days of their company:
